Is it just me? (Sigh: probably)

...Or is there something unutterably, undisguisedly crass about a toilet roll? It's handy, it's functional. But couldn't we cover it up somehow? Why do we display it as we do?

I can understand the motive behind the creation of a roll-guard, available on Amazon.com. But even better is to do without the loo roll altogether. My (English) grandparents' house is the only place I've ever seen this, though. It's a miniature tissue box put into a decorative fitting, and it feeds you individual sheets. I've always thought this far more civilized. But it is also more expensive than simple rolls, and evidently never caught on. I can't even find an image of one.
